About 200,000 African children are susceptible to trafficking each year. Children are likely to be trafficked for prostitution, forced and domestic labour and early marriage. Trafficking is considered a violation of the rights of children in several African countries however, the poverty existing in households and the absence of social protection safety nets for vulnerable households, the high profits earned by traffickers for successfully delivering trafficked children to user destinations, and the low conviction rates for trafficking offences across African countries, have caused child trafficking to persist. Moreover, frameworks for addressing the issue of child trafficking are not grounded in the social, cultural, political and economic realities of the people vulnerable to the practice. It is expected that policies for addressing child trafficking should be based on the lived experiences of African children within the contexts of trafficking in their individual countries; rather than uniform frameworks for addressing trafficking or protecting children that are based on western notions of children, childhood, child protection and development. To ensure that policies adopted to combat child trafficking target and are suited to the needs of children and families vulnerable to the practice, this policy brief recommends that African countries adopt a child-centred approach that is built on encouraging the participation of affected children in decision making on trafficking, and reinforces the need for evidence-based research with trafficked children themselves that provides useful information for policy making.

Abstract:'The rate of childhood trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation has been on the global rise. In order to prevent the continued increase of the number of at-risk children, integrative micro and macro level models have been found to be most effective in terms of the prevention and intervention of human trafficking. The purpose of this paper is to tackle social aspects of child trafficking including the phenomenon of the feminization of trafficking, and the psychological consequences experienced by the child survivor. Effective psychotherapy that focuses on an integration of the self, interpersonal reparation, and cultural reintegration will be highlighted through prevalent trauma-focused models and clinical observations.'

Method/abstract:'Child sexual trafficking is a crime for which few “hard” facts are known or ascertainable, and for which the “known” facts are constantly changing. This paper describes the current situation of child victims of various types of sexual slavery in the volatile context of the U.S.-Mexico border. This project grew out of a partnership between directors of the Embrey Human Rights Program [EHRP] at Southern Methodist University and the Liaison for Training and Technical Assistance for the Southern Border Initiative [SBI] of the U.S. Department of Justice’s AMBER Alert Program. The mission of the EHRP is to educate students and others to promote and defend human rights around the world. SBI is a federal program designed to improve law enforcement capabilities and capacity related to the investigation and recovery of missing, endangered, abducted and exploited children in the U.S.-Mexico border region. This paper is based on personal knowledge of SBI personnel, discussions with law enforcement, police reports, case studies, media reports, government documents from both the United States and Mexico, and EHRP research in Tucson, Arizona conducted in January, 2011.'

'The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights (the committee) began its study in 2009 of ―the issue of the sexual exploitation of children in Canada, with a particular emphasis on understanding the scope and prevalence of the problem of the sexual exploitation of children across the country and in particularly affected communities.''The Internet has not only facilitated the purchase and sale of sex and pornography, it has created a new context for human sexual interaction. The Internet has become a place for children to explore their developing sexuality. Evidence on what children can be exposed to over the Internet underscored for the committee the importance of proper guidance for children, whether from parents or educators.'

In March of 2011, The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) released a report done in collaboration with Vanderbilt University based on research on sex trafficking of minors in the state. The TBI Director Mark Gwynn called the results “shocking” and said that  “Human trafficking and sex slavery in Tennessee is more common than previously believed possible”.   The report analyses the problem and what is being done within various parts of the state. The study also examines various case studies as well as the recomendations for Tennessee given by the Polaris Project from 2010.
