In a recent report entitled, 'This is what we die for: Human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo power the global trade in cobalt',16 global brands are identified as failing to conduct basic checks on whether their source of cobalt comes from child exploitation. Amnesty International and Africa Watch came forward with accusations against companies such as Microsoft, Apple, Sony and Samsung. Both organizations said the mines employ boys and girls as young as seven to work in highly dangerous conditions for about a US$1 a day for 12 hours of labor. The report reveals that traders buy the cobalt from the mines in Democratic Republic Congo and sell it to Chinese-owned company Congo Dongfang Mining, which then sells it to battery component manufacturers in China and South Korea. It goes on to trace how this cobalt is used to power mobile phones, laptop computers, and other portable electronic devices. Using basic hand tools, miners dig out rocks from tunnels deep underground, and accidents are common. Despite the potentially fatal health effects of prolonged exposure to cobalt, adult and child miners work without even the most basic protective equipment. This report is the first comprehensive account of how cobalt enters the supply chain of many of the world’s leading brands.Source: Amnesty International

An Examination of Forced Labor and other Human Rights Risks Endemic to the Thai Seafood Sector by Verité.'Seeking to better understand the risks of forced labor and human trafficking in the Thai seafood industry, Nestlé contracted Verité to conduct a focused investigation of six production sites in Thailand—three shrimp farms (one in Mahachai and two in Surat Thani), two ports of origin (Ranong Fish Port and Mahachai Fish Port), and one docked fishing boat (in Ranong Fish Port). These sites were identified by a third-party supply chain mapping consultant as being linked with the fishmeal (or fish feed) used as feed input in farms producing whole prawns for Nestlé. Verité assessed these and a number of other worksites in the same supply chain. The three-month assessment focused on forced labor and trafficking risks in the recruitment, hiring, employment and living conditions of foreign migrant workers in the targeted vessel-to-marketplace shrimp and fishmeal supply chain of one of Nestlé’s key suppliers.'

About 200,000 African children are susceptible to trafficking each year. Children are likely to be trafficked for prostitution, forced and domestic labour and early marriage. Trafficking is considered a violation of the rights of children in several African countries however, the poverty existing in households and the absence of social protection safety nets for vulnerable households, the high profits earned by traffickers for successfully delivering trafficked children to user destinations, and the low conviction rates for trafficking offences across African countries, have caused child trafficking to persist. Moreover, frameworks for addressing the issue of child trafficking are not grounded in the social, cultural, political and economic realities of the people vulnerable to the practice. It is expected that policies for addressing child trafficking should be based on the lived experiences of African children within the contexts of trafficking in their individual countries; rather than uniform frameworks for addressing trafficking or protecting children that are based on western notions of children, childhood, child protection and development. To ensure that policies adopted to combat child trafficking target and are suited to the needs of children and families vulnerable to the practice, this policy brief recommends that African countries adopt a child-centred approach that is built on encouraging the participation of affected children in decision making on trafficking, and reinforces the need for evidence-based research with trafficked children themselves that provides useful information for policy making.

It has been observed over decades that, poverty forces poor families to send their children to work, which results in a serious problem the world is facing nowadays. Child labour can leave many severe consequences on children and their families. When children work, it does not mean as a standard, they support their families economically, neither all of them get paid for their work since many of them work as bonded labour or as slaves. In addition to that, they face many problems which may cause permanent damage to their childhood.Children usually work to contribute and provide financial support to their families. Their health is often ignored by their parents or they may not be aware about their children’s health. This paper illustrates how both India and Nigeria have adopted laws and regulations to eliminate child labour. However despite all the efforts, child labour and the factors that influence the incidence of child labour continues to be prevalent. The results from this study explain the reasons which forces children to work, poverty. This paper also draws conclusion that governments, societies, and communities should cooperate in a better way with each other to decrease child labour. Possible and innovate solutions and suggestions are arose at the end of this paper.

Rambho was enslaved weaving carpets when he was just ten years old. When he made a mistake he was beaten. When his fingers bled from overwork, the slave owners would dip them in fuel and light a match to his fingertips. "Freedom and Beyond" traces the story of Rambho and other child slaves from their remote Indian villages to the carpet looms and ultimately to freedom. "Freedom and Beyond" explores what it takes to rescue child slaves, help them take back their lives, and how slavery can be stopped at its very source. Viewers get a behind the scenes look as activists from Bal Vikas Ashram risk everything to free children and help create a sustainable future for them in their home villages.
