'The linkage between trafficking in human beings and torture and ill-treatment is often overlooked. In a 2008 Report, the former UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment acknowledged for the first time that in certain cases, and under certain conditions, trafficking can amount to torture and ill-treatment. The Committee against Torture has also recognized that human trafficking and torture are closely intertwined and has repeatedly commented on the need for appropriate legislation and other measures acknowledging this fact.In this context, this Fifth Occasional Paper (Paper) addresses and denounces the use of torture and other forms of ill-treatment by traffickers as a means to subjugate, control and punish trafficked people. It analyses under which circumstances trafficking can amount to torture or other forms of ill-treatment and it identifies the connection between both human rights violations from a clinical perspective. Importantly, the Paper provides the conceptual framework to understand what trafficking cases entail in terms of the physical and psychological effects on trafficked persons, and the legal and clinical implications that flow from this characterization, including in terms of legal entitlements.'

This briefing lays out some of the central human rights concerns pertaining to the severe abuses faced by refugees and asylum-seekers occurring in Sudan and Egypt, and includes recommendations on vital, urgent efforts that must be made to bring an end to these crimes. Amnesty International is greatly concerned for the safety and security of refugees and asylum-seekers held captive in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, after being kidnapped in and around the Shagarab refugee camps in eastern Sudan. In Sinai they are subjected to brutal violence and inhuman treatment during attempts to extract ransom payments from their families.

Chils marriage in South Asia: International and constitutional legal standards and jurisprudence for promoting accountability and change. This briefing paper is published by The Center for Reproductive Reights (2013).The law is a critical starting point for the elimination of child marriage in South Asia. Significant gaps and inconsistencies in, as well as poor implementation of,existing laws have left girls vulnerable to grave violations of their human rights and constitutional rights arising from child marriage, including their reproductive rights and the right to be free from sexual violence. Where governments fail to ensure effective legal frameworks for the elimination of child marriage, as well as the provision of access to reproductive health care and legal remedies to already-married girls, they are complicit in the resulting harms to girls’ lives and well-being that arise from early pregnancy and sexual violence. Human rights law is clear that governments must address impunity where violations of these rights occur, including by ensuring accountability when child marriages are performed. National constitutions in countries across the region provide a firm legal basis for accountability and legal protection. Implementation of laws prohibiting child marriage must come along with broader efforts to remove legal barriers that make girls vulnerable to child marriage and deny those trapped in such marriages meaningful legal remedies. Importantly, governments must take concrete steps to improve the overall status of girls in society by ensuring respect for their dignity and legal rights.

This is a report published by the United Nations Population Fund (2012).Child marriage is a human rights abuse. It constitutes a grave threat to young girls’ lives, health and future prospects. Marriage for girls can lead to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, and in developing countries these are the main causes of death among 15–19 year-old girls. Girls who are married are also exposed to sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. For a girl, marriage can mean the end of her education, can set aside her chances of a vocation or career, and can steal from her foundational life choices.Ending child marriage will help countries reach the Millennium Development Goals, and should be a high priority in the post-2015 development agenda. Each country should collect and analyze its own data to help target geographic “hotspot” areas where high proportions and numbers of girls are at risk. Policies and programmes should be designed accordingly. Policies are needed across sectors to delay marriage, including raising the legal minimum age at marriage to 18, ensuring that girls go to school and attend beyond primary level, addressing underlying factors perpetuating the practice, identifying alternatives and creating opportunities for girls, and reaching out to communities to support these moves. Girls need, education, health, social and livelihood skills to become fully empowered citizens. Most immediately important is helping already married girls to avoid early pregnancy and when pregnant have access to appropriate care during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum (including access to family planning).

About 200,000 African children are susceptible to trafficking each year. Children are likely to be trafficked for prostitution, forced and domestic labour and early marriage. Trafficking is considered a violation of the rights of children in several African countries however, the poverty existing in households and the absence of social protection safety nets for vulnerable households, the high profits earned by traffickers for successfully delivering trafficked children to user destinations, and the low conviction rates for trafficking offences across African countries, have caused child trafficking to persist. Moreover, frameworks for addressing the issue of child trafficking are not grounded in the social, cultural, political and economic realities of the people vulnerable to the practice. It is expected that policies for addressing child trafficking should be based on the lived experiences of African children within the contexts of trafficking in their individual countries; rather than uniform frameworks for addressing trafficking or protecting children that are based on western notions of children, childhood, child protection and development. To ensure that policies adopted to combat child trafficking target and are suited to the needs of children and families vulnerable to the practice, this policy brief recommends that African countries adopt a child-centred approach that is built on encouraging the participation of affected children in decision making on trafficking, and reinforces the need for evidence-based research with trafficked children themselves that provides useful information for policy making.

Abstract:'This paper explores how Psychodrama and Sociodrama exercises with women victims of human trafficking, is fundamental for the recovery process allowing to build relational networks. According to Moreno (1953) each person lives in a Social Atom, that it is the smallest social unit. The social atom is composed by all the people (real of fantasized) that are essential for one’s person life. Based on this concept, Sociodrama techniques are used to work in groups with traumatized and isolated people. Several other psychodrama techniques have proven their positive therapeutic effect in the work with trafficked women.'

Abstract:'This Practice Guide (PG) is designed to be used to provide the necessary guidance to comply with the expectations of DCF Policy 31-10-6.1. Included are the definitions and terms Social Workers may hear or use when working with human trafficking victims; the specific steps for intake of reports of human trafficking of children; a decision map for determining the risk of child for human trafficking; and the areas of physical, sexual, substance use, behavioral health and dental care that are to be assessed. Given the critical role of the Regional Human Trafficking Response Team (HART) liaisons, the practice guide provides a brief outline of their duties as well as risk assessment and monitoring tools. Finally, a nurse screening tool is included as it is believed that the role of nurses is critical to early identification and prevention of child from becoming victims of sex trafficking.'
