Abstract:'Little has been reported on how survivors of trafficking integrate into new communities and what types of rehabilitation services and programs they may need to live independently and self-sufficiently. The release of federal funds under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 to assist certain survivors of trafficking has spurred the rapid and eclectic development of advocacy programs and services. This article explores the needs of survivors of trafficking, the variety of services and advocacy programs that are developing to assist them, and the complex reactions of immigrant communities to incidents of trafficking.'

Abstract:'Human trafficking, modern-day slavery, is a crime against the world’s most vulnerable individuals. Traffickers may abduct, deceive, use, and sell men, women, and children for profit or personal gain. Victims are treated as commodities who often endure physical and/or sexual brutality, exploitation, and mental and emotional abuse. As a result of this trauma, victims may experience multiple, long-lasting consequences. Once victims escape or are recovered from their trafficking situations, they often receive services across a wide variety of systems (e.g., social services and criminal justice); therefore, coordinated service delivery is critical to successful intervention. This paper briefly describes the crime of human trafficking, its impact on victims, and models for multidisciplinary, collaborative approaches for serving this population.'

This module focuses primarily on the effects of sexual abuse and exploitation on victims of trafficking in persons. It starts with a general overview of psychological reactions and then outlines some of common trauma-inducing experiences of victims before and during the trafficking process. The effects of these experiences are then listed and explained. Finally, this chapter explores the implications that these reactions may have for investigators and suggests methods to avoid re-traumatizing victims and to help them begin the recovery process. This chapter also provides guidance on how to minimize the impact that psychological reactions may have on investigations.

This literature review maps out what is currently understood about the intersections of youth, risk, and social media. The article framed this review around the most prevalent risks youth face when online: harassment, solicitation, and exposure to problematic content. The article states that much more research is needed about the participation in social media of registered sex offenders:'No laws prevent registered sex offenders from participating in social media, but many people are concerned about their participation and the potential risk it poses to youth. There are no studies that concern the activities of registered sex offenders online, whether their participation in social media is correlated with increased risk, or whether they use social media to contact youth more than other channels. Much more research is necessary to determine whether registered sex offenders pose a threat to youth through their online activities.'

This document describes the types of online activities encompassing the sexual exploitation of children. It also offers background characteristics of victims and perpetrators. Another section highlights challenges faced by law enforcement officials and government policymakers in dealing with the online sexual exploitation of children:'A program that addresses all efforts to protect children from online exploitation and coordinates the work of all agencies and organizations working in this field is strongly recommended. There is currently no entity that coordinates or addresses all aspects of the online exploitation of children on a national level.'

This article describes a statement written by the National Centre of Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) around the new phenomenon of 'sexting'. A definition of 'sexting' is given, whereas also some considerations around the subject:'NCMEC does not believe that a blanket policy of charging all youth with juvenile or criminal violations will remedy the problem of sexting. Youth sometimes engage in risky behavior. However, the combination of the Internet, easy transmission of digital photos, and poor judgment can lead to serious and unintended consequences including becoming the victim of enticement, blackmail, harassment and exploitation by both adults and other youth. Increased education about these consequences and law enforcement's use of prosecutorial discretion will help prevent these situations.'

This article states that the taking, sending or forwarding of sexually suggestive images (sexting) can have social, psychological and legal consequences and should be recognized as a public health issue:'Teens need to be aware that they can be arrested, charged and convicted for possessing and distributing child pornography, even when the pornography they are sending is of themselves.'And:'Health care professionals caring for teens should recognize that sexting is a public health issue. Health care professionals need to become better informed about the issue so that they can comfortably include questions about sexting in their teen health visits, and integrate discussions on safe and responsible online and cell phone activity. Most importantly, health care professionals need to speak with teens and their families about the risks and potential consequences of sexting. Addressing these issues may prevent a teen from finding him- or herself in a compromising position.'
