This report from Polaris and the Sanar Wellness Institute provides an overview of promising therapeutic support that can be used to enhance individual and group intervention for survivors of all forms of human trafficking. Based on the experiences of serving clients in Polaris’s New Jersey office over the past five years, Polaris has found that certain trauma-informed therapeutic supports helped survivors gain resiliency. These interventions include: therapeutic/restorative yoga; expressive arts therapy; and mindfulness and sensory-based practices. Clients have expressed lower levels of stress, increased self-regulation, and strengthened life skills after receiving these therapeutic support interventions. The findings aim to assist social workers, clinicians, mental health counselors, and victims’ service providers in enriching their existing services and increasing trauma-informed supports for survivors of human trafficking.

Individuals that have experienced human trafficking are often left alone to manage the wounds of trauma without any sort of roadmap towards healing. Over the past five years, Polaris New Jersey has worked to identify, and implement, therapeutic support which can supplement and enrich individual psychotherapy, case management sessions, and group interventions. These therapeutic supports have been reported by survivors as important components in fostering resilience, processing trauma, and reconnecting with their bodies after experiencing violence. We hope that other providers and practitioners find these practices helpful as they assist survivors on their unique jour neys towards healing.

Abstract:'This study explored the psychological coercion of trafficking in human person, antecedents such as causes, psychological coercion and processes and psychosocial consequences. We adopted Victimological paradigm which explains why some people are more vulnerable to victimization than others through victim-trafficker relationship, repeat victimization and role of lifestyle in victimization risk. The study presented causes of trafficking in human persons as the desire to migrate. The tendency to migrate may be precipitated by poverty, oppression, lack of human rights, lack of social or economic opportunity, dangers from conflict or instability. Political instability, militarism, civil unrest, internal armed conflict and natural disasters could result to desire to migrate. We presented psychological coercion as the means of obtaining initial victim and posited that this instills psychological disorders, for example depression, absence of emotional reactions, anxiety disorder, self-blame, helplessness or hopelessness, nightmare, suicidal ideation, paranoia, anger and rage control problems, psychoactive substance and alcohol abuse, dissociative disorders and host of others (Kornzinski, 2013). The psychological processes involve recruitment, initiation and indoctrination and were applied to obtain, maintain and gain control over the victims. Trafficking in human person has negative psychosocial consequences in its entirety. Psychosocial consequences of trafficking in human persons varied with undermining the extended family ties, and in many cases, the forced absence of women leads to the breakdown of families and neglect of children and the aged (Danailova-Trainor & Laczko 2010). The study concluded that the traffickers and the victim of trafficking need rehabilitation and recommended cognitive therapy for necessary rehabilitation.'

Abstract:'Child trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) are egregious crimes, extreme forms of child maltreatment, and major violations of children’s human rights. Although empirical research is sorely lacking on the impact of such crimes on children’s developmental well-being, numerous reports describe the physical and emotional trauma, humiliation, violence, degradation associated with treatment as a commodity, and unrelenting fear and abuse. This paper provides an overview of the impact of trafficking and CSE on children and the practical implications of related research in the areas of child maltreatment and victimization. Findings suggest that trafficking and CSE present grave risks to the physical, psychological, spiritual, and social–emotional development of young victims. Implications for psychology and social policy, in terms of prevention and psychosocial rehabilitation for children who have been victimized, are also presented.'

Abstract:'The rate of childhood trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation has been on the global rise. In order to prevent the continued increase of the number of at-risk children, integrative micro and macro level models have been found to be most effective in terms of the prevention and intervention of human trafficking. The purpose of this paper is to tackle social aspects of child trafficking including the phenomenon of the feminization of trafficking, and the psychological consequences experienced by the child survivor. Effective psychotherapy that focuses on an integration of the self, interpersonal reparation, and cultural reintegration will be highlighted through prevalent trauma-focused models and clinical observations.'

Abstract:'Assessment for mental disorders should be part of re-integration follow-up care for women survivors of human trafficking. Mental disorders at that time, most commonly PTSD and depression, are likely to be influenced by a range of predisposing, precipitating and maintaining factors. Care plans for survivors of trafficking must be based on individual needs, and must apply clinical guidelines for the treatment of PTSD and of depression. Evidence is needed on the effectiveness of therapy for PTSD in survivors of human trafficking.  Assessment for mental disorders should be part of re-integration follow-up care for women survivors of human trafficking. This paper seeks to answer the question: Could prosecutors’ greater awareness of the effects of trauma on human trafficking victims lead to more effective prosecution and increased convictions for human trafficking in the United States? The question will be answered and the solutions presented by using scholarly research in the fields of trauma, victim rights, and human trafficking to argue that greater prosecutorial awareness and response to victims’ needs is one way to improve outcomes in human trafficking prosecutions and fulfill the federal mandate to protect victims of trafficking.
