A lack of data exists pertaining to the unique challenges and barriers that child victims of sexual exploitation, including sexual exploitation in travel and tourism, face when accessing justice. To address this knowledge gap, ECPAT International conducted a study (A2J Study) to explore why "child-friendly justice" is so elusive for sexually exploited children and to identify the specific barriers that continue to prevent these children from accessing justice.

We believe the hospitality industry has a critical role to play in protecting our most vulnerable minors and women from trafficking as well as putting strong safeguards in place to prevent these crimes from happening in hotels. Through education, advocacy, partnership with law enforcement and support for victims’ services, we are proud to continue to lead on this important work.

There are over two million children living in residential care centres, or ‘orphanages’, in the world, although it has been suggested that the real number is likely to be far higher, and possibly as high as eight million. Research has shown that four out of five of these children have at least one living parent and the vast majority could be living with one or both of their parents or with other family members if provided with appropriate support. Despite well-established evidence of the harmful impact of institutionalisation on children’s development and wellbeing, international travellers volunteering in such centres, often with very limited, if any, supervision, continues to be promoted as an acceptable form of tourism and volunteering experience. Children in residential care are already at a higher risk of abuse and exploitation and are exposed to further risk of harm by unqualified and unsupervised international volunteers. In addition, residential care operators can come to see international volunteering and children in their ‘orphanages’ as a key means of income, fuelling the growth of residential care in the country and promoting children’s unnecessary separation from their families.

"If there is a single theme to this year’s Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, it is the conviction that there is nothing inevitable about trafficking in human beings. That conviction is where the process of change really begins—with the realization that just because a certain abuse has taken place in the past doesn’t mean that we have to tolerate that abuse in the future or that we can afford to avert our eyes. Instead, we should be asking ourselves—what if that victim of trafficking was my daughter, son, sister, or brother?"This year’s TIP Report asks such questions, because ending modern slavery isn’t just a fight we should attempt—it is a fight we can and must win."The TIP Report is the product of a yearlong effort requiring contributions and follow-up from employees in the United States and at our diplomatic outposts across the globe, host country governments, and civil society." – John F. Kerry, Secretary of State

Online paedophile activity in social media has become a major concern in society as Internet access is easily available to a broader younger population. One common form of online child exploitation is child grooming, where adults and minors exchange sexual text and media via social media platforms. Such behaviour involves a number of stages performed by a predator (adult) with the final goal of approaching a victim (minor) in person. This paper presents a study of such online grooming stages from a machine learning perspective. It aims to characterise such stages by a series of features covering sentiment polarity, content, and psycho-linguistic and discourse patterns. Our experiments with online chatroom conversations show good results in automatically classifying chatlines into various grooming stages. Such a deeper understanding and tracking of predatory behaviour is vital for building robust systems for detecting grooming conversations and potential predators on social media.

UNODC has released a special edition of Crime and Society on measuring trafficked populations. This volume contains articles from leading academics covering a range of methods and practices including the network scale-up method and capture-recapture. This issue of Forum is aimed at presenting the variety of research approaches and findings to a broader public and contributing to a discourse on how to obtain through research more sound data on the different aspects of trafficking in persons. The articles presented in this volume deal with challenges and solutions in collecting research data on trafficking in persons and presenting quantitative and qualitative aspects in reaching hidden populations and how to use them for research on such trafficking.

This article will describe a trauma-informed approach to responding to these crimes and discuss practices where such an approach has already been incorporated, highlighting areas where continued, additional integration is necessary. This article will also identify gaps in the application of the approach, specifically in reference to other co-occurring, violence against women and human trafficking crimes, and suggest strategies to more effectively integrate traumainformed investigative and prosecutorial practices.

This module focuses primarily on the effects of sexual abuse and exploitation on victims of trafficking in persons. It starts with a general overview of psychological reactions and then outlines some of common trauma-inducing experiences of victims before and during the trafficking process. The effects of these experiences are then listed and explained. Finally, this chapter explores the implications that these reactions may have for investigators and suggests methods to avoid re-traumatizing victims and to help them begin the recovery process. This chapter also provides guidance on how to minimize the impact that psychological reactions may have on investigations.
