This article states that most publicity about online “predators” who prey on naive children using trickery and violence is largely inaccurate:'Internet sex crimes involving adults and juveniles more often fit a model of statutory rape—adult offenders who meet, develop relationships with, and openly seduce underage teenagers—than a model of forcible sexual assault or pedophilic child molesting. The purpose of this article is to provide an accurate, research-based description of the characteristics and prevalence of this high-profile social problem; make recommendations for effective responses; indicate needs for future research; and give professionals basic resources to help manage issues that arise in practice and other contexts.'

This document describes the types of online activities encompassing the sexual exploitation of children. It also offers background characteristics of victims and perpetrators. Another section highlights challenges faced by law enforcement officials and government policymakers in dealing with the online sexual exploitation of children:'A program that addresses all efforts to protect children from online exploitation and coordinates the work of all agencies and organizations working in this field is strongly recommended. There is currently no entity that coordinates or addresses all aspects of the online exploitation of children on a national level.'

The Attorney-General’s Department commissioned the Australian Institute of Criminology to search for, locate and report on the existing international academic and policy-relevant literature concerning the use of social networking sites for grooming children for sexual purposes, the extent and nature of the problem, and effective ways in which to address it.The report canvasses international material published in English since January 2000, located by searching various academic databases. This literature review maps out what is currently understood about the intersections of youth, risk, and social media. The article framed this review around the most prevalent risks youth face when online: harassment, solicitation, and exposure to problematic content. The article states that much more research is needed about the participation in social media of registered sex offenders:'No laws prevent registered sex offenders from participating in social media, but many people are concerned about their participation and the potential risk it poses to youth. There are no studies that concern the activities of registered sex offenders online, whether their participation in social media is correlated with increased risk, or whether they use social media to contact youth more than other channels. Much more research is necessary to determine whether registered sex offenders pose a threat to youth through their online activities.'

This article describes a statement written by the National Centre of Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) around the new phenomenon of 'sexting'. A definition of 'sexting' is given, whereas also some considerations around the subject:'NCMEC does not believe that a blanket policy of charging all youth with juvenile or criminal violations will remedy the problem of sexting. Youth sometimes engage in risky behavior. However, the combination of the Internet, easy transmission of digital photos, and poor judgment can lead to serious and unintended consequences including becoming the victim of enticement, blackmail, harassment and exploitation by both adults and other youth. Increased education about these consequences and law enforcement's use of prosecutorial discretion will help prevent these situations.'

This report represents a national survey which is conducted on cell phone owners from ages 12-17. The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project found that 4% of cell-owning teens ages 12-17 say they have sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images of themselves to someone else via text messaging. And 15% of cell-owning teens ages 12-17 say they have received sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images of someone they know via text messaging on their cell phone. The report states:'Over the past year, press coverage and policy discussions have focused on how teens are using or misusing cell phones as part of their sexual interactions and explorations. The greatest amount of concern has focused on “sexting” or the creating, sharing and forwarding of sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images by minor teens. Both laws and law enforcement practices around sexting are emerging to deal with the issue and they vary significantly from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Some law enforcement officers and district attorneys have begun prosecuting teens who created and shared such images under laws generally reserved for producers and distributors of child pornography.'
