Abstract:'To examine past-year and lifetime rates of online victimization and associations with offline victimizations, trauma symptomatology, and delinquency among adolescents. Data were collected through telephone interviews from a nationally representative sample of 2,051 adolescents (ages, 10-17) as part of the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence. Data were collected between January and May, 2008. Six percent of youth reported a past-year online victimization and 9% a lifetime online victimization. Almost all youth reporting a past-year online victimization (96%) reported offline victimization during the same period. The offline victimizations most strongly associated to online victimization were sexual victimizations (e.g., sexual harassment, being flashed, rape) and psychological and emotional abuse. Online victims also reported elevated rates of trauma symptomatology, delinquency, and life adversity. Prevention and intervention should target a broader range of behaviors and experiences rather than focusing on the Internet component exclusively. Internet safety educators need to appreciate that many online victims may be at risk not because they are naive about the Internet, but because they face complicated problems resulting from more pervasive experiences of victimization and adversity.'

Abstract:'In 2010, the National Institute of Justice funded the Urban Institute’s Justice Policy Center to measure the size and structure of the underground commercial sex economy in eight major US cities. The goals of this study were to: (1) derive a more rigorous estimate of the underground commercial sex economy (UCSE) in eight major US cities and (2) provide an understanding of the structure of this underground economy. To date, no reliable data exist to provide national or state policymakers with a verifiable and detailed understanding of underground commercial sex trade networks or the ways in which these networks interact with one another on the local, state, or interstate level. In addition, there is no information regarding the relationship between the UCSE and the local commercial sex trade or commercial sex activity conducted over the Internet. This study aimed to close the gap in our understanding about the nature and extent of these activities.'

'You may have heard of the deep web and the dark web. They sound insidious, but they actually describe the majority of the Internet. Think of the deep web as sites that are hard for Google to index because they're either changing all the time or they require interaction. The dark web refers to sites that are designed to be inaccessible to ordinary browsers. In the deep and dark webs, there are ads for erotic services from sex workers who are victims of trafficking, of exploitation. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency - DARPA - has developed an Internet search tool to help bust human traffickers.'Click here for the full article and radio fragment.

This article is about an international group of women judges that is determined to change the prosecution of sextortion cases by shedding new light on this rarely challenged form of corruption. The article states:'Together with the Association of Women Judges in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Philippine Women Judges Association and the International Association of Women Judges, the Tanzanian judges investigated ‘‘sextortion’’ in a three-year program that ended last year. The study resulted in a 48-page guide for judges, prosecutors, lawyers, lawenforcement officers, advocates and others involved in justice systems around the world. The goal was to identify legal provisions under which ‘‘sextortion’’ can be prosecuted, and encourage changes in laws if needed. The judges also wanted to give the problem a name. And so the term ‘‘sextortion’’ was born.'

Abstract:'This article explores the variety of ways in which the Internet is used to facilitate the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) and provides national incidence estimates for the number of arrests involving such technology-facilitated crimes in 2006. The National Juvenile Online Victimization Study is a nationally representative longitudinal study of more than 2,500 local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies across the United States. The current article utilizes Wave 2 data, which surveyed arrests in 2006 for Internet-related sex crimes against minors. Detailed data were collected via telephone interviews with investigators about 1,051 individual arrest cases. Findings show that an estimated 569 arrests for Internetfacilitated commercial sexual exploitation of children (IF-CSEC) occurred in the United States in 2006.'

This report describes the problem of Child Sexual exploitation (CSE) through the 'real voices' within this matter; the vulnerable youth, the runaways, the orphans, the victims etc. This research was conducted in the area of greater Manchester. The author stated one of the many recommendations:'I am concerned about the underidentification of child sexual exploitation and want to see all front-line police response officers trained in spotting CSE, along with Police Community Support Officers. It is concerning that GMP figures on recorded sexual offences for under-18-year-olds between 1 June 2013 and May 31, 2014 show that only 111 cases out of 1,691 were ‘flagged’ on the police computer as CSE. This is concerning, as in my view this is likely to be significant underreporting.'

Abstract:'Little is known about why some children and young people are vulnerable to being groomed online, yet this has important implications for policy, practice and prevention. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify factors contributing to a young person’s vulnerability towards online grooming. Thematic Analysis was conducted on eight interviews with young people (six females and two males) who had experienced online grooming, resulting in sexual abuse online and/or offline. The reasons why participants engaged with the offenders varied on most levels of the Bron-fenbrenner (1979) ecological model (including individual, family, community and society). The loss of family protection was found to be central in contributing to vulnerability, as is online risk taking behavior. Three victim vulnerability scenarios emerged: 1) multiple long-term risk factors, 2) trigger events and 3) online behavioral risks. In each of these scenarios, parental and family factors were very important. It is suggested that further research is needed to investigate the applicability of these scenarios to other samples. Recommendations include parent and carer communication and involvement with their children’s internet use, as well as consistent, early onset internet safety education.'

Abstract:'This paper presents an overview of the benefits and risks of web-based interactions for youth. As an illustrative example, the psychosocial effects of online grooming practices which are designed to lure and exploit children are discussed. This report constitutes a landscape study of legal and institutional frameworks for combating a form of corruption involving sexual exploitation that the International Association of Judges (IAWJ) has named sextortion. The research covered nine jurisdictions representative of diverse cultural and legal backgrounds: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Kenya, Mexico, Taiwan, Uganda and the United Kingdom. The report illustrates how sextortion manifests; examines the laws available for prosecuting it; describes the response, too often inadequate, of the criminal justice system; and highlights areas for further action.

This factsheet describes the core issues and main challenges which Europol crosses in tackling the sexual exploitation of children. It states:'While there is no doubt that sexual abuse and exploitation of children is a serious problem, there is a lack of accurate and reliable statistics on the nature of the phenomenon and the numbers of children involved, mainly due to differences in national definitions of different child sexual abuse and exploitation offences.'
