Abstract:'To examine past-year and lifetime rates of online victimization and associations with offline victimizations, trauma symptomatology, and delinquency among adolescents. Data were collected through telephone interviews from a nationally representative sample of 2,051 adolescents (ages, 10-17) as part of the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence. Data were collected between January and May, 2008. Six percent of youth reported a past-year online victimization and 9% a lifetime online victimization. Almost all youth reporting a past-year online victimization (96%) reported offline victimization during the same period. The offline victimizations most strongly associated to online victimization were sexual victimizations (e.g., sexual harassment, being flashed, rape) and psychological and emotional abuse. Online victims also reported elevated rates of trauma symptomatology, delinquency, and life adversity. Prevention and intervention should target a broader range of behaviors and experiences rather than focusing on the Internet component exclusively. Internet safety educators need to appreciate that many online victims may be at risk not because they are naive about the Internet, but because they face complicated problems resulting from more pervasive experiences of victimization and adversity.'

Abstract:'This paper reports one of the first studies to identify the impact on the victim of online grooming leading to online and/or offline sexual abuse. Eight young people (six females and two males) who had been victimised through online grooming and subsequently experienced sexual abuse online and/or offline were interviewed. Thematic Analysis was used to analyse the data. The impact of sexual abuse on the young person appears to be correlated with their level of vulnerability prior to the onset of grooming and also their experience with professionals following abuse. Most notably, those experiencing multiple long-term risk factors suffered greater negative impact after the grooming and abuse on an individual level (e.g., self-harm, depression), compared to those who had more protection.'

This article states that the taking, sending or forwarding of sexually suggestive images (sexting) can have social, psychological and legal consequences and should be recognized as a public health issue:'Teens need to be aware that they can be arrested, charged and convicted for possessing and distributing child pornography, even when the pornography they are sending is of themselves.'And:'Health care professionals caring for teens should recognize that sexting is a public health issue. Health care professionals need to become better informed about the issue so that they can comfortably include questions about sexting in their teen health visits, and integrate discussions on safe and responsible online and cell phone activity. Most importantly, health care professionals need to speak with teens and their families about the risks and potential consequences of sexting. Addressing these issues may prevent a teen from finding him- or herself in a compromising position.'

This study aimed to examine the prevalence of sexting behaviors (sexually explicit messages and/or pictures) among an at-risk sample of early adolescents as well as the associations between sexting behaviors and sexual behaviors, risk-related cognitions, and emotional regulation skills. It also aimed to determine whether differences in risk were associated with text-based versus photo-based sexts.Twenty-two percent of the sample reported having sexted in the past 6 months; sexual messages were endorsed by 17%, sexual messages and photos by 5%. Pictures were endorsed significantly more often by females and Latinos. Sexting of any kind was associated with higher rates of engaging in a variety of sexual behaviors, and sending photos was associated with higher rates of sexual activity than sending text messages only. This article concludes that sexting behavior (both photo and text messages) was not uncommon among middle school youth and co-occurred with sexual behavior. The given data suggest that phone behaviors, even flirtatious messages, may be an indicator of risk. Clinicians, parents, and health programs should discuss sexting with early adolescents.

This article describes a statement written by the National Centre of Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) around the new phenomenon of 'sexting'. A definition of 'sexting' is given, whereas also some considerations around the subject:'NCMEC does not believe that a blanket policy of charging all youth with juvenile or criminal violations will remedy the problem of sexting. Youth sometimes engage in risky behavior. However, the combination of the Internet, easy transmission of digital photos, and poor judgment can lead to serious and unintended consequences including becoming the victim of enticement, blackmail, harassment and exploitation by both adults and other youth. Increased education about these consequences and law enforcement's use of prosecutorial discretion will help prevent these situations.'

This literature review maps out what is currently understood about the intersections of youth, risk, and social media. The article framed this review around the most prevalent risks youth face when online: harassment, solicitation, and exposure to problematic content. The article states that much more research is needed about the participation in social media of registered sex offenders:'No laws prevent registered sex offenders from participating in social media, but many people are concerned about their participation and the potential risk it poses to youth. There are no studies that concern the activities of registered sex offenders online, whether their participation in social media is correlated with increased risk, or whether they use social media to contact youth more than other channels. Much more research is necessary to determine whether registered sex offenders pose a threat to youth through their online activities.'

This project builds on nearly ten years of research, at three different levels of academic study, and aims to answer the following question: 'How have judges presiding over Québec provincial courts interpreted and enforced section 172.1 (Luring a Child) of the Criminal Code of Canada?'The project is designed to provide a more detailed understanding of persons charged under the authority of the Criminal Code’s Luring a Child provision, the circumstances of the offence, and how Québec provincial court judges interpreted this information, rendered related decisions, and, in so doing, enforced this particular area of Canadian criminal law.The proposed postdoctoral project is designed to provide a more expansive understanding of the ICL phenomenon.

This article is intended to provide background for the discussion of interventions related to sexting. It begins with a definition of sexting, and continues with overviews of research and media stories related to sexting. It then discusses the statutory and constitutional framework for child pornography and obscenity.
