Abstract:'The rate of childhood trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation has been on the global rise. In order to prevent the continued increase of the number of at-risk children, integrative micro and macro level models have been found to be most effective in terms of the prevention and intervention of human trafficking. The purpose of this paper is to tackle social aspects of child trafficking including the phenomenon of the feminization of trafficking, and the psychological consequences experienced by the child survivor. Effective psychotherapy that focuses on an integration of the self, interpersonal reparation, and cultural reintegration will be highlighted through prevalent trauma-focused models and clinical observations.'

Abstract:'This thesis explores how the traumatic experience of human trafficking can have a psychological effect on the second-generation. As there is a lack of research and literature on the transgenerational traumatization of human trafficking, this is a comparative work that examines and compares the characteristics and effects of three other forms of trauma: torture, sexual assault, and the Holocaust. This paper then extrapolates to consider what similar effects human trafficking might have upon the second generation. The literature relied upon come from a number of fields, including psychology, social work, and public policy. This work will first provide a description of trauma, including what constitutes trauma and the typical effects that can be expected from a victim of trauma. This thesis then ultimately provides an analysis of what can be expected from the children of victims of human trafficking, based on the findings of the transgenerational traumatization of torture, sexual assault, and the Holocaust. A proposal for treatment and suggested course of action is also presented.'

Abstract:'Child trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) are egregious crimes, extreme forms of child maltreatment, and major violations of children’s human rights. Although empirical research is sorely lacking on the impact of such crimes on children’s developmental well-being, numerous reports describe the physical and emotional trauma, humiliation, violence, degradation associated with treatment as a commodity, and unrelenting fear and abuse. This paper provides an overview of the impact of trafficking and CSE on children and the practical implications of related research in the areas of child maltreatment and victimization. Findings suggest that trafficking and CSE present grave risks to the physical, psychological, spiritual, and social–emotional development of young victims. Implications for psychology and social policy, in terms of prevention and psychosocial rehabilitation for children who have been victimized, are also presented.'

Abstract:'Assessment for mental disorders should be part of re-integration follow-up care for women survivors of human trafficking. Mental disorders at that time, most commonly PTSD and depression, are likely to be influenced by a range of predisposing, precipitating and maintaining factors. Care plans for survivors of trafficking must be based on individual needs, and must apply clinical guidelines for the treatment of PTSD and of depression. Evidence is needed on the effectiveness of therapy for PTSD in survivors of human trafficking.'

Abstract:'Little has been reported on how survivors of trafficking integrate into new communities and what types of rehabilitation services and programs they may need to live independently and self-sufficiently. The release of federal funds under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 to assist certain survivors of trafficking has spurred the rapid and eclectic development of advocacy programs and services. This article explores the needs of survivors of trafficking, the variety of services and advocacy programs that are developing to assist them, and the complex reactions of immigrant communities to incidents of trafficking.'

Abstract:'This paper explores how Psychodrama and Sociodrama exercises with women victims of human trafficking, is fundamental for the recovery process allowing to build relational networks. According to Moreno (1953) each person lives in a Social Atom, that it is the smallest social unit. The social atom is composed by all the people (real of fantasized) that are essential for one’s person life. Based on this concept, Sociodrama techniques are used to work in groups with traumatized and isolated people. Several other psychodrama techniques have proven their positive therapeutic effect in the work with trafficked women.'

Individuals that have experienced human trafficking are often left alone to manage the wounds of trauma without any sort of roadmap towards healing. Over the past five years, Polaris New Jersey has worked to identify, and implement, therapeutic support which can supplement and enrich individual psychotherapy, case management sessions, and group interventions. These therapeutic supports have been reported by survivors as important components in fostering resilience, processing trauma, and reconnecting with their bodies after experiencing violence. We hope that other providers and practitioners find these practices helpful as they assist survivors on their unique jour neys towards healing.

This report from Polaris and the Sanar Wellness Institute provides an overview of promising therapeutic support that can be used to enhance individual and group intervention for survivors of all forms of human trafficking. Based on the experiences of serving clients in Polaris’s New Jersey office over the past five years, Polaris has found that certain trauma-informed therapeutic supports helped survivors gain resiliency. These interventions include: therapeutic/restorative yoga; expressive arts therapy; and mindfulness and sensory-based practices. Clients have expressed lower levels of stress, increased self-regulation, and strengthened life skills after receiving these therapeutic support interventions. The findings aim to assist social workers, clinicians, mental health counselors, and victims’ service providers in enriching their existing services and increasing trauma-informed supports for survivors of human trafficking.

Abstract:'Human trafficking, modern-day slavery, is a crime against the world’s most vulnerable individuals. Traffickers may abduct, deceive, use, and sell men, women, and children for profit or personal gain. Victims are treated as commodities who often endure physical and/or sexual brutality, exploitation, and mental and emotional abuse. As a result of this trauma, victims may experience multiple, long-lasting consequences. Once victims escape or are recovered from their trafficking situations, they often receive services across a wide variety of systems (e.g., social services and criminal justice); therefore, coordinated service delivery is critical to successful intervention. This paper briefly describes the crime of human trafficking, its impact on victims, and models for multidisciplinary, collaborative approaches for serving this population.'
