The findings from this survey paint a picture of inequality in the provision of Sex Relationship Education (SRE) at home and at school in England today, and also indicate a trend towards SRE improving, albeit very slowly, over time. There is overwhelming evidence about the protective function of SRE at both primary and secondary school level. The case for accelerating improvement in SRE cannot be made more strongly.

This article examines the link between restrictive immigration schemes, specifically ‘tied visas’ and the selective application of labour laws, with exploitation of workers. It focuses on the situation of migrant domestic workers, who accompany their employers to the United Kingdom (UK) and are exposed to both an excessively restrictive visa regime, introduced in April 2012, and limited labour protections. The immigration status of these workers is currently tied to a named employer, a restriction that traps workers into exploitative conditions, often amounting to forced labour, servitude or slavery. Additionally, current UK labour laws are either not enforced or not applicable to domestic workers. The article concludes that unless the current immigration regime is abolished and comprehensive labour law protections are extended to migrant domestic workers, exploitation will continue.

The 'Trafficking Survivor Care Standards' aim to provide a blueprint for UK-wide service providers offering high quality care to adult survivors of modern slavery, including trafficking. The Standards provide a flexible framework with guiding principles and practical recommendations that support agencies can incorporate into their own existing policies and procedures. The ultimate goal is to promote an integrated, holistic and empowering approach that places the real needs of survivors at the centre of the process of sustained recovery, far beyond the ‘reflection period’. These standards are the result of a collaborative Expert Working Group, formed of front-line practitioners who came together in recognition of a need to develop survivor care standards applicable across the UK. The Expert Group included multiple member organisations.

The UK's government tackles the spread of child sexual abuse imagery online by proposing that live video streams of abuse should be punished in the same way that recorded clips already are. In this way a legal loophole is closed. As a consequence of this new legislation, people who broadcast such material, would face up to 14 years in jail. This has been stated in the Queens speech of 2015, in which the government set out its legislative programme for the year ahead.Click here to see the BBC article.

The BBC reports that they have traced two Filipino men suspected of blackmailing a UK teenager who took his own life. Daniel Perry had been the victim of online sexual blackmail or 'sextortion' by a group operating from the Philippines, after being seduced into taking part in an explicit Skype chat. This report describes the problem of Child Sexual exploitation (CSE) through the 'real voices' within this matter; the vulnerable youth, the runaways, the orphans, the victims etc. This research was conducted in the area of greater Manchester. The author stated one of the many recommendations:'I am concerned about the underidentification of child sexual exploitation and want to see all front-line police response officers trained in spotting CSE, along with Police Community Support Officers. It is concerning that GMP figures on recorded sexual offences for under-18-year-olds between 1 June 2013 and May 31, 2014 show that only 111 cases out of 1,691 were ‘flagged’ on the police computer as CSE. This is concerning, as in my view this is likely to be significant underreporting.'

The Law and Freedom Foundation of 'mosque buster' lawyer Gavin Bobby has just published a comprehensive report on the UK grooming gangs. Entitled "Easy Meat – Multiculturalism, Islam and Child Sex Slavery", the report examines in detail; what these gangs do; the chronology of the problem; institutional failure and the abuse of the narrative of racism; the Islamic cultural background and the scale of the problem. The report establishes that 20 years ago childcare professionals dealing with the schoolgirl victims made recommendations which could have protected them, but these steps have never been implemented.

Abstract:'Little is known about why some children and young people are vulnerable to being groomed online, yet this has important implications for policy, practice and prevention. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify factors contributing to a young person’s vulnerability towards online grooming. Thematic Analysis was conducted on eight interviews with young people (six females and two males) who had experienced online grooming, resulting in sexual abuse online and/or offline. The reasons why participants engaged with the offenders varied on most levels of the Bron-fenbrenner (1979) ecological model (including individual, family, community and society). The loss of family protection was found to be central in contributing to vulnerability, as is online risk taking behavior. Three victim vulnerability scenarios emerged: 1) multiple long-term risk factors, 2) trigger events and 3) online behavioral risks. In each of these scenarios, parental and family factors were very important. It is suggested that further research is needed to investigate the applicability of these scenarios to other samples. Recommendations include parent and carer communication and involvement with their children’s internet use, as well as consistent, early onset internet safety education.'

Abstract:'The process of online grooming facilitates child abuse and is a threat to young people across the world. This literature review explores the research surrounding how young people are targeted by offenders on the internet. Definitions, prevalence and characteristics of online grooming are addressed in addition to consideration of child sexual abuse theories and internet behaviours. There are a variety of techniques used by internet groomers to manipulate young people (e.g. flattery, bribes, threats) and different ways that young people engage in risk taking behaviour on the internet (e.g. communicating with strangers online, sharing personal information). While models and typologies can aid professionals in understanding the crime, it is important to acknowledge that internet offenders, victims and the dynamic between the two are often unique and varied. This is fundamental to the development of effective preventative education for online grooming and abuse. The review concludes that research concerning the online grooming of young people is limited and calls for further study in this field.'
