'An offender’s primary weapons in the commission of a child sexual assault are the victims’ and other family members’ trust and love of him or her. Often minimized, in-home offenders are frequently perceived as less dangerous. However, they are "more experienced; more invested; cross more boundaries; are safer from exposure; create more betrayal and family conflict; and are more psychologically/emotionally involved in offending."5. It is essential to recognize that the offender grooms both the victim as well as the victim’s family members. In addition to trust and love, the offender uses other nontraditional weapons.'

Abstract:The present qualitative study explores advocates’ opinions of misinformation about human trafficking in the media and describes advocates’ strategies to counter the misinformation presented by the media. Thus, 15 advocates who work against human trafficking in Chicago-based nonprofit organizations participated in semistructured interviews about their opinions and strategies. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The present study identifies specific misperceptions of human trafficking in the media, highlights advocates’ opinions of this misinformation, and discusses advocates’ strategies to counteract inaccurate media, adding support to the role of media advocacy. Advocates note how media images shape and perpetuate stereotypes of trafficking through glamorizing sex work and sensationalizing stories that are most often international depictions of trafficking. Advocates report media generally shares only a piece of the story, simplifying the stories of survivors and the issue of human trafficking. Advocates critique media perpetuating these misperceptions for how they may contribute to policies and programs which fail to address structural factors that create vulnerabilities to be trafficked and the multisystem needs of survivors. However, advocates also note misperceptions can be counteracted by producing sensitive, informed media through social platforms. Advocates share their strategies counteracting misinformation through engaging in informative conversations, utilizing social media to educate, and promoting media messages of survivor agency. Research, clinical, and policy implications are also discussed. The present study emphasizes the importance of decision makers and service providers being critical consumers of media and to assess how media portrayals may (or may not) inform their understanding and response to the issue.

Abstract:'Sex trafficking, trafficking for the purpose of forced sexual exploitation, is a widespread form of human trafficking that occurs in all regions of the world, affects mostly women and girls, and has far-reaching health implications. Studies suggest that up to 50%of sex trafficking victims in the USA seek medical attention while in their trafficking situation, yet it is unclear how the healthcare system responds to the needs of victims of sex trafficking. To understand the intersection of sex trafficking and public health, we performed in-depth qualitative interviews among 277 antitrafficking stakeholders across eightmetropolitan areas in five countries to examine the local context of sex trafficking. We sought to gain a new perspective on this form of gender-based violence from those who have a unique vantage point and intimate knowledge of push-and-pull factors, victim health needs, current available resources and practices in the health system, and barriers to care. Through comparative analysis across these contexts, we found that multiple sociocultural and economic factors facilitate sex trafficking, including child sexual abuse, the objectification of women and girls, and lack of income. Although there are numerous physical and psychological health problems associated with sex trafficking, health services for victims are patchy and poorly coordinated, particularly in the realm of mental health. Various factors function as barriers to a greater health response, including low awareness of sex trafficking and attitudinal biases among health workers. A more comprehensive and coordinated health system response to sex trafficking may help alleviate its devastating effects on vulnerablewomen and girls. There are numerous opportunities for local health systems to engage in antitrafficking efforts while partnering across sectors with relevant stakeholders.'

The writer of this article states that teens should have the right to 'sext':'This means they would have the same rights as adults to produce sexual images of themselves without fear of prosecution for creating child pornography. The right to sext is also about the right to demand that these images are kept private. While further legal reforms are needed to protect online privacy (for youth and adults), allowing teens the right to sext is the first step in clarifying that eople who receive these images have no right to distribute them further without permission. The panic about sexting teens highlights the need for broader conversations about social media that can fully account for the complicated issues of privacy and consent in new digital media.'

This article states that most publicity about online “predators” who prey on naive children using trickery and violence is largely inaccurate:'Internet sex crimes involving adults and juveniles more often fit a model of statutory rape—adult offenders who meet, develop relationships with, and openly seduce underage teenagers—than a model of forcible sexual assault or pedophilic child molesting. The purpose of this article is to provide an accurate, research-based description of the characteristics and prevalence of this high-profile social problem; make recommendations for effective responses; indicate needs for future research; and give professionals basic resources to help manage issues that arise in practice and other contexts.'

This document describes the types of online activities encompassing the sexual exploitation of children. It also offers background characteristics of victims and perpetrators. Another section highlights challenges faced by law enforcement officials and government policymakers in dealing with the online sexual exploitation of children:'A program that addresses all efforts to protect children from online exploitation and coordinates the work of all agencies and organizations working in this field is strongly recommended. There is currently no entity that coordinates or addresses all aspects of the online exploitation of children on a national level.'

Abstract:'This paper examines discourses of male prostitution through an analysis of scientific texts. A contrast is drawn between nineteenth-century understandings of male prostitution and twentieth-century accounts of male prostitution. In contrast to female prostitution, male prostitution was not regarded as a significant social problem throughout the nineteenth century, despite its close association with gender deviation and social disorder. Changing conceptions of sexuality, linked with the emergence of the ‘adolescent’, drew scientific attention to male prostitution during the 1940s and 1950s. Research suggested that male prostitution was a problem associated with the development of sexual identity. Through the application of scientific techniques, which tagged and differentiated male prostitute populations, a language developed about male prostitution that allowed for normative assessments and judgements to be made concerning particular classes of male prostitute. The paper highlights how a broad distinction emerged between public prostitutes, regarded as heterosexual/ masculine, and private prostitutes, regarded as homosexual/effeminate. This distinction altered the way in which male prostitution was understood and governed, allowing for male prostitution to be constituted as a public health concern.'

Abstract:'Male prostitution altered its form dramatically over the course of the twen tieth century. While some of these changes relate to economics and general cultural shifts (the Depression of the 1930s, the rise of a counterculture during the 1960s and 70s), some of the most im- portant changes have arisen in response to transformations in the idea of 'homosexuality,” and the growing influence this idea had within mid  dle-class and then working-class culture. This essay identifies the diverse forms male prostitution has taken since the late-Victorian period, and also examines the way in which male prostitution has been written about by various commentators in different eras.'

This article is about the story of a victim of sextortion, who helped the FBI track down a perpetrator who's made 350 victims. The article states:'It’s called sextortion, in which predators coerce or manipulate someone (often an underage someone) into sending lewd, compromising pictures or videos, many of which are released publicly or traded as child pornography. Although there are no specific  numbers for sextortion, it’s on the rise; according to the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, reports of online child sexual solicitation surged 44 percent between 2010 and 2014.'
