Issues in Child Labor in Africa

Datum

01 sep 2001

The paper outlines, in a stylised manner, the empirical information about child labour in Sub-Saharan Africa that is known from the social science literature. It highlights the difference between child labour performed at home and in the market, and argues that there are important, but at times quite different, welfare issues that are raised by the two forms of child labour. It then discusses the particular workings of the larger child labour markets in Africa. At the end it opens up a policy discussion for what governments in general and the donor community in particular might do to address these welfare issues.
